We need to focus our annual spending power of 1.4 trillion dollars on ourselves rather than relying on others. If we lack support from the white American community, we should refrain from purchasing their products. As Africans in America, we have been labeled African-American, a term that highlights our exclusion from true American identity. While white Americans are recognized simply as American, we are seen as outsiders, tolerated rather than embraced. This disparity is evident in the support I receive when I propose funding initiatives.
